Are you looking for some family fun and wild adventure? Visit the Franklin Park Zoo and see hundreds of exotic animals from around the world!  You can even stay for lunch at the southwestern-themed Giddy Up Grill concession stand, which has delicious food for the whole family!  The zoo is located at One Franklin Park Road in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston.  Hours through September 30th are Monday-Friday 10am to 5pm, weekends 10am to 6pm.  Starting October 1st, the zoo is open daily from 11am to 3pm.  Admission for adults is $14, $8 for children and kids under age 2 are free.

In September, the weather is wonderful for walking along the Freedom Trail, which passes through 16 historical landmarks in the City of Boston. The highly anticipated musical, Wicked, opens tonight for a seven week engagement at the Boston Opera House. The musical is currently the eighteenth longest running show in Broadway history and has broken box office records around the world! The story is based on the best selling novel Wicked: The Life and Time of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, which tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Galinda, the Good Witch of the North. Life is good® presents the 2010 Life is Good Festival at Blue Hills. The festival will take place September 11th and 12th at Prowse Farm in Canton, MA. The headlining artists of the event include: Jason Mraz, Ben Harper & Relentless 7, Guster, Corinne Bailey Rae, Ziggy Marley, Galactic, Ozomatli and Mavis Staples, as well as other rising artists. Instead of VIP’s, this event only has VGP’s-Very Good People, which can be achieved through reaching a fundraising goal or by making a donation. These VGP’s will enjoy perks throughout the event as a thank you for their gifts to the Life is good Children’s Foundation. Adult single-day tickets are $50, and $90 two-day tickets are also available. Tickets for children ages 6-12 are available for $10 and children 5 and under are free.

As Mayor Menino’s Wednesday Night Concerts at City Hall Plaza come to a close, tonight’s show will feature a special performance from American Idol Season Eight contestant, Danny Gokey. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and attendees can enjoy a fun filled show with other acts from New England’s premier country band led by Charlestown, NH native Jandee Lee Porter, the Zac Brown Band and Framingham’s Jo Dee Messina. The concert is presented by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with series sponsors WCVB-TV Channel 5 and the Boston Herald with support from the Boston Police Athletics League.

August 28th from 10:30am- 7pm is the Downtown Plymouth Waterfront Festival.

The day will be filled with lots of food, places to shop, face painting, exhibits, and other fun events. Returning “favorites” will be the Arts & Crafts show, Ducky Dash, the 5th Annual Motor Head’s Cruise in Car Show, America’s Hometown Plymouth Idol, New England Aquarium’s traveling tidepool, and more. The Festival Carnival is a big favorite and will include tons of games and rides which will cost an extra price to play. One of Boston’s most beautiful spaces will be filled with music in a free lunchtime concert series every Friday throughout the summer. The Boston Public Library courtyard, one of the best-kept secrets in town, will host music that ranges from jazz to classical and from a cappella to operetta. The series delivers entertainment to music lovers through August 27 in Copley Square. All concerts are free and begin at 12:30 p.m.

On August 27, Robert Pinsky, Rakalam Bob Moses, and Stan Strickland will be performing. In this spell-binding collaboration of masters, the former U.S. Poet Laureate performs his poetry accompanied by two outstanding jazz improvisers on drums and saxophone. Asked to describe the music and how he feels about it, Pinsky offered these lines from his poem, History of My Heart:

. . . the heart

Yearning further into giving itself into the air, breath

Strained into song emptying the golden bell it comes from,

The pure source poured altogether out and away.

The Boston Public Library’s partners in making these free lunchtime musical interludes available to the public are American Century Music, the Boston Conservatory, the New England Conservatory of Music, and JazzBoston.

Interested in Natural History? Do you love museums? Through January 2, 2011 the Harvard Museum of Natural History will feature a dramatic array of horns, antlers, and head mounts from a variety of species! The “Headgear” exhibit will display collections of Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology with artifacts fashioned from the horn and antler of hoofed animals around the globe! The exhibit will also include a 3-D diorama and video presentations. Visitors will even have the opportunity to compare their own body height to the world’s largest antlers!
