Concierge Pick of the Week
With so many of the large record store chains forced out of business (including Tower Records and Virgin to name just two), and the outlook for the recording industry continuing to look murky, it is all the more amazing that one of Boston’s most beloved local music shops continues to thrive. Newbury Comics, already conveniently located throughout Massachusetts and in select New England towns, has recently opened two “mega stores,” including one in Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall.

The new openings are the latest landmark events for this “underground music” store whose original location resides on the trendy and hip Newbury Street (hence its name). Since it’s inception in 1979, Newbury Comics has become THE place that locals and tourists alike will frequent to discover esoteric CD or vinyl recordings, comic books, DVDs or random assortments of pop culture goodies (from Bruce Lee t-shirts to collectable vinyl toys). Occasionally the store also branches out and plays host to in-store music performances or autograph signings. Previous appearances have included Flavor Flav and New Kids on the Block.
But, perhaps most instrumental in helping the store to maintain its popularity are those well known “wicked cheap” prices (Newbury Comics has always boasted a huge selection of new CDs priced at just $9.99). If you have kids expecting a present when you return from a trip to Boston, there are also plenty of reasonably priced Boston-themed knick knacks and other regional paraphernalia.
While over-indulgence is a common side-effect of a visit here, you won’t feel too guilty about a visit to Newbury Comics…after all you will be supporting a homegrown business and a source of local pride for all Bostonians.
